November, Semiotics Essay Analysis and Lettering
In our
lesson with Caz we looked at the assignment brief in more detail, taking a look
at what the questions are asking and how we go about laying out our answer. Caz
is only able to look through a whole draft once so I will have to make sure I
have developed my work enough in order to get a good level of feedback.
We then
looked at what each question is asking for, I have chosen the 2nd
question “Discuss with reference to at least two visual theorists to what
extent and through which techniques can design be used to convey a message to a
given audience.”. This question is asking for visual theorists and how theory
is applied to different things. This will need to include my viewpoint and why
I think what I think. I can then justify my viewpoint and back it up.
I have
also created a paragraph plan: -
- - Visual
theorist intro
- - What
their theory is and how it is applied to a specific area or work, include image
if need be
- - What
I think
- - Why
I think this
“Wiley
Online” and “Google Scholar” are great links to find information and articles
around semiotics theories. Google Scholar also gives an option where you can
copy a citation ready made for you.
After
looking at my initial start and my feedback we came to reach conclusions. I am
going to look into other aspects of visual techniques, this includes layout and
colour. This will show my understanding of how the theorists work relates to
production.
I am
going to show my initial thoughts of different works and then reflect these
views off the semiotic theorists that I have researched.
I am
going to search the work of Peter Saville as this work heavily relates to the
theories of Jean Baudrillard. It incorporates the use of already determined
signs to come together to create a new message or symbol. The Leisure Noise
album cover of the band Gay Dad is a great example of this as it uses a road
sign symbol to create a new meaning. I am going to research this meaning
further for my assignment.

We were
set a task to overlay an image of some food with text, this will create an
interesting handmade effect which will look rustic and attractive.
The
production I have made which is shown below looks effective and rustic. I like
the look of it as the contrast of the white against the background makes it
stand out. Also the rustic look gives the production a handmade feel.
Looked
through the task given by Suzi on branding for Slice Of Life. This will be
producing branding for a new healthy pizza brand that is looking to advertise
to a wide range of people. The look needs to be eye catching, modern and
effective.
