October, Design Materials Assignment and House Style
- How
corporations create a consistent recognisable brand across their different platforms, this makes it easily recognisable for customers and clients
At the
start of the lesson we were introduced to the Assignment, we discussed the
points we would be marked on and how we are expected to progress. I have a good
idea of want I want to do and I am now going to look at getting this noted down
and planned out thoroughly.
We then
finished cutting out stencils and started spray painting. I am happy with how
my work turned out and I think this way of presenting work is very effective. The
design process involved taking a portrait picture we liked off the internet, we
then used Photoshop to filter the image into B&W. We could then control the
amount of effect the shadows had on the image. I then used this to find the
correct level of shadow that defined the facial features clearly.
We then
printed this image off, laminated the paper and cut around the shadows. We then
used spray paint to paint through the stencil.

In the afternoon,
we were then introduced to 3D printing and the programme Cinema 4D. We were
taught the basic techniques behind using the programme and creating a 3D
printed object.

The BBC
use a consistent brand across their products, this is shown in their use of the
same typeface and branding style throughout BBC News, BBC Sport, BBC Music and
many more.
KERRANG
also use a similar magazine cover style in all their editions in order to help
show their specific brand. This style is also targeted specifically toward
their age group which is young teenagers.
During
the lesson, we looked at different tools that can help with design management within
Adobe InDesign. I found looking at these tools very useful as it can easily
speed up processes when creating designs.
One
tool we looked into was Character Styles, this allows the designer to save specific
options for different text styles. For example, if a title was created and it
needs to be continued throughout the design then these parameters can be saved
and easily applied to the next text input.
During
the lesson we looked at:

Below I
have shown some design work I have done using greyscale images a bold cyan
colour and a range of different page layouts. I think the contrast between the
greyscale images and bold blue worked really well. I also thought that the edge
to edge images work really well and make a big effect on the reader of the
material.
