18th September, Fonts and Materials

Design with Materials with Gal

Looked at the where graphics is applied in the real world, whether this being in airports, on vehicles or in the high street. We had a conversation about the uses of graphic design and the different aspects and details of this area of work.

We then looked at the types of graphic design. This included Signage, Web banners, advertisement, merchandise and products. We then looked at how different designs can relate to different products and businesses. Discussions were held on how and where graphics are used and displayed.

Graphics also relate to different elements within stores or online. They affect the customer experience and also vary depending on the scale of the product or design work. Lighting and the effect on the audience also makes a difference to what the design product needs to focus on. Designs can range in size depending on their purpose and what they are representing.

During this lesson, we were also set the task of creating stencils using cutting tools. This was part of the goal of creating a physical product (keyring) using design materials. The theme was around “The Home” so I decided to create a border keyring which included a tree and house morphed into one.

Looking at Fonts with Matt

In the afternoon lesson with Matt we looked at the use of fonts and how vital they are to graphics. We discussed our personal favourite fonts and he explained the basic points as to how fonts can change how people view certain information.

We then looked at colour and how it brings out different feelings within the audience, an example of this would be the use of red which makes people feel hungry and raises metabolism. Purple is also seen to show wealth and high quality. This is because in Roman times purple was an expensive colour to dye clothes in therefore people linked wealth with the colour purple.

He then took us through the process of Tracking and Kerning. This is changing the distance between text and specific letters within words. This can create different viewpoints to different materials using text. An example of this is the FedEx logo, by changing the distance between letters they have created negative space which symbolises an arrow which in turn relates to their courier service.

Matt then set us the task of using these processes to display text in a creative and innovative way. Shown below…...
